Educational aids for children living in slums
The slum can leave a mark on a child that will follow him or her for the rest of their life. Large gaps in their education, their nutrition level, differences in their hygiene and clothes can signal to the world where they’re from, and cause them to be trapped in a cycle of poverty.
When the first eleven children from the slum came to us, they could barely read and write, and lacked the most basic skills in math. We decided to give them “bridge” courses, taught in our Hemmersbach Kid’s Family home and also at the Caldwell Academy English Medium School, to try and bring them up to grade level. We also paid careful attention to the kid’s nutrition and hygiene.
After only three months of these classes, every single one of the children received marks of “A” and “A+”. We were astounded. The teachers told us that they were blown away by the progress the kids had made. And now when we see them using their own tablets to do online classes, so super excited to use learning apps, we can’t help but think these children from the street have taken a significant step.
